David Bowie 1972-1973 Ziggy Stardust Tour
In February Bowie started out on an extensive tour of the UK. He played in tiny halls at first, mainly colleges, but his audience grew at a dazzling rate thanks to the Ziggy Stardust character he produced. He had declared himself bisexual, which had increased interest in Ziggy still further, along with some more of his eccentric utterances. Ziggy, with orange hair,make-up,dressed in tight jumpsuits, radiating sexuality, presented a sensational act with some 10 costume changes which attracted ever growing numbers of – especially British – youngsters , When the Ziggy Stardust album came out in June that meant Bowie’s great break-through. The audience and the media agreed that a rare talent was born
The UK Tour
In February 1972 David Bowie began an extensive tour of the United Kingdom. The first concerts took place in small venues, mainly colleges and universities. During these early performances Bowie introduced the Ziggy Stardust character, which quickly became central to the live shows.
With orange hair, make-up, tight jumpsuits and an androgynous appearance, Ziggy Stardust presented a striking and unfamiliar stage image. Bowie’s public declaration of bisexuality and his increasingly eccentric public statements intensified media interest and public attention, creating a strong sense of mystery around the character.
As the tour progressed, audience numbers grew rapidly. The release of The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars in June 1972 marked Bowie’s major breakthrough. From May onwards larger venues were booked, and by late summer demand for tickets far exceeded availability.
The growing popularity of Ziggy Stardust led to the appearance of fans adopting similar clothing styles, make-up and visual presentation. At the same time Bowie maintained a controlled distance from the public. Interviews were limited, access was restricted, and Ziggy was often kept physically separated from journalists and audiences, strengthening the atmosphere of mystery around the character.
Ziggy Stardust was accompanied by The Spiders from Mars.
After the success of the UK tour, Bowie travelled to the United States aboard the Queen Elizabeth II for his first American tour. Pianist Mike Garson was added to the Spiders from Mars, and the group Fumble was engaged as support act. Although the original intention was to reproduce the full theatrical Rainbow Theatre production, this proved financially impossible. The tour nevertheless achieved major success, with many sold-out concerts and seventeen additional shows added due to demand. Bowie’s experiences in America during this period later influenced the material for Aladdin Sane.
The American Tour
In February 1973 Bowie began his second American tour. On 14 February 1973 the tour opened in New York City at Radio City Music Hall. The band was expanded with additional musicians, allowing Bowie to focus more fully on vocals and stage presentation.
The Japan Tour
On 12 May 1973, following nine concerts in Japan, Bowie began a UK tour consisting of sixty shows. In Japan he renewed contact with fashion designer Kansai Yamamoto, who designed new stage costumes for the tour. All concerts were sold out well in advance. The Ziggy Stardust Tour developed into one of the most significant touring periods in Bowie’s career.

He did neither mainland Europe nor Australia, in his Ziggy tours, which is unfortunate considering his rising popularity and worldwide interest in him and his band. Music is the 60’s and 70’s was simply phenomenal. For example, where the Beatles left off, he took over with technology, such as ‘Space Oddity’, ‘Starman’ and ‘Ziggy and the Spider’s from Mars’. A truly one of a kind performer and creative talent. And he came out of the closet decades before it was fashionable or commonplace. He redefined genres in multiple aspects of society: music, fashion and the alternative gender possibilities.
Hi Rober
I Wil You give one gig , tell my which you want ?
greeting Diedrich
I live in Arizona USA. I would like to be able to listen to the shows but have nothing to trade. I would gladly purchase but not sure if that is allowed. I would appreciate any suggestions. Thank you,
Robert
