David Bowie 1974 Diamond Dogs Tour
And…. in the death ,As the last few corpses lay rotting on the slimy Thoroughfare, The shutters lifted in inches in Temperance Building, High on Poacher’s Hill. And red, mutant, eyes gaze down on Hunger City. No more big wheels. Fleas the size of rats sucked on rats the size of cats, And ten thousand peoploids split into small tribes, Coveting the highest of the sterile skyscrapers, Like packs of dogs assaulting the glass fronts of Love-Me Avenue Ripping and rewrapping mink and shiny silver fox, now legwarmers Family badge of sapphire and cracked emerald Any day now, the year of the Diamond Dogs….
“This ain’t rock and roll! This is genocide!”
Less than a year after the farewell concert at Hammersmith Odeon, Bowie returned to the stage in June 1974 as Halloween Jack, his latest personification. Together with Jules Fisher and Mark Ravitz he created a stage design that transformed the Diamond Dogs album into a visual environment. The result was Hunger City, a futuristic city in decay, built with large-scale scenery and special effects.
The Diamond Dogs Tour was not a conventional rock tour but a theatrical production, combining music and theatre. The band remained at the back of the stage and often behind screens, while Bowie dominated the stage alone to enhance the theatrical effect. This arrangement caused repeated tensions within the band and led to conflicts during the tour.
The massive stage construction, built in four weeks at a cost of approximately $220,000, proved extremely difficult to transport. Road crews worked up to 21 hours a day to dismantle, move and rebuild the scenery in a different city each night, making the tour physically demanding for everyone involved.
The Pre-Soul Tour
After the exhausting June and July tour, Bowie began a short follow-up tour in September through California and Arizona. Due to Bowie’s growing soul influences, this tour is generally not regarded as a direct part of the Diamond Dogs Tour.
The Soul Tour
On 5 October 1974, in St. Paul, Minnesota, Bowie launched a two-month tour across the eastern United States. The Diamond Dogs scenery was abandoned and replaced by a minimalist stage design featuring a large white screen onto which Bowie’s silhouette was projected. In larger venues, live video projections were used so the audience could follow the performance more clearly.
The band, now led by pianist Mike Garson and known as The Mike Garson Band, opened each concert with a short soul set, ending with Memory of a Free Festival, after which Bowie entered the stage. Setlists included material from Young Americans, marking a clear musical transition. Despite severe physical exhaustion during the tour, Bowie continued to perform intensely, supported by six backing vocalists, producing some of the strongest vocal performances of the period.
