Early life and beginnings

Sterling Campbell was born in New York in 1964. From a young age he showed a strong interest in rhythm, constantly playing on objects before his mother placed him behind a drum kit.

At age fifteen he met Dennis Davis, David Bowie’s drummer at the time, who introduced him to Bowie’s live performances. This experience became a defining moment in his musical direction.

He later studied at the High School of Music and Art in New York, developing his technical foundation as a drummer.

Early career in New York

After graduating, Campbell worked in New York’s music scene, performing in small venues and building experience. One of his early gigs included playing at The Ritz hotel lobby, while steadily developing his reputation as a session drummer.

His breakthrough came in 1986 when Cyndi Lauper invited him to join her True Colors Tour. This led to further high-profile work, including touring with Duran Duran in 1989.
