Earthling represents one of David Bowie’s most energetic and experimental phases. Released in the mid-90s, the album was heavily influenced by the contemporary electronic scene, specifically drum and bass, industrial rock, and jungle. Bowie combined these frantic electronic textures with traditional rock song structures and his signature melodic sensibilities.
The 2021 Remaster, overseen by original co-producers Reeves Gabrels and Mark Plati, revitalizes the album's dense soundscape. By 2026 standards, this version remains the definitive way to experience the record, as the remastering process provided a much-needed sonic "cleanup." It enhanced the punch of the percussion and the clarity of the distorted guitar layers that were sometimes lost in the original 1997 mix
