Inspiration: Bowie was inspired to record the song after meeting Nina Simone in Los Angeles. He was a great admirer of her 1966 version and recorded it as a tribute to her.

Musicians: The track features the classic “DAM Trio” rhythm section: Carlos Alomar (guitar), George Murray (bass), and Dennis Davis (drums), along with Earl Slick on lead guitar.

Production: The track was co-produced by David Bowie and Harry Maslin. Bowie’s vocal performance is widely regarded as one of the finest of his entire career.

Release: Although the album was released in 1976, the song was not issued as a single until November 1981 to promote the compilation album ChangesTwoBowie.

Music Video: A minimalist black-and-white promotional video was filmed by David Mallet, featuring Bowie and his session musicians in a studio setting.
